Understanding Georgia Oversize Permits
Georgia oversize permits are required for every trucking business that want to transport loads that exceed the usual legal dimensions. These permits are valid for ten days, giving you enough time to plan your trip and ensure compliance with state rules.
Key Regulations:
Operating Hours:
You may operate your vehicle from one half hour after sunrise to one half hour before dusk, seven days a week. If your load does not weigh more than 125,000 pounds and fits regulatory specifications, you may request continuous travel when obtaining your permit.
Restricted Travel:
Please note that no movement is permitted on Sundays. In Atlanta, travel is restricted during peak hours specifically, 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Additionally, important holidays are prohibited for permit transfers.
Legal Dimensions and Weight Limits
Understanding the legal dimensions is critical when submitting for a Georgia overweight permits application.
Length: A 48' to 53' trailer can be up to 75 feet long (including the overhang).
Width: Maximum of 8′-6″, or 8′ on some undesignated roads.
Height: Up to 13′-6″.
Weight: The gross weight limit is usually 80,000 lbs., however permits allow for larger weights based on the number of axles:
- 5 axles weigh 100,000 lbs.
- Six axles: 125,000 pounds.
- 7 axles: 148,000 pounds.
- Eight axles: 150,000 pounds.
Loads that exceed these dimensions or weights require a Super Load permit.
Escort Requirements:
Certain loads may necessitate escorts because of their size:
- Loads over 75 feet require at least one escort.
- Widths more than 12 feet may require escorts depending on the route.
Additional Permits.
In addition to the regular oversize permits, Note Trucking can assist you with the following permits:
- Georgia has a temporary IFTA permit and a temporary fuel authorization.
These permits are essential for complying with gasoline tax requirements when operating in Georgia.
