Venous ulcers (also called venous stasis ulcers) are open, slow‐healing wounds that usually develop around the ankles when vein circulation is impaired. The underlying varicose ulcer cause is often chronic venous insufficiency damaged or weakened vein valves allow blood to pool in the lower legs, increasing pressure and causing fluid to leak into tissues. Risk factors include varicose veins, history of deep vein thrombosis, obesity, prolonged standing or sitting, smoking, age, pregnancy, high blood pressure and diabetes.
